Lea wins the coffee argument
The lounge end got the sofas; the coffee went in at the other end, on a bench within reach of the consoles. Lea’s case in August was that anyone debugging at two in the morning should have somewhere to sit that is not a plinth. The follow-on argument was that they should not then have to walk the length of the room for a cup, and it went the same way. Machine, cups, and a jar of biscuits that is not expected to survive October.

The new R&D facility is going up: a glass-walled cut into the working face, with console banks going in on both sides and the north face itself visible through the wall. It is being built as a bench for the Autonomous Extraction programme — somewhere to work on the units’ control software and put a build through its tests without spending a shift to find out.

The new yard comes online next month, adding a fourth blending line, a second on-site lab, and enough covered storage to hold winter stock without tarping it. Tours for wholesale partners open the week after commissioning.

Three extraction units are on the lab bench, deliberately kept off the north face. Once the room is live, software will reach them before it reaches the fleet, so a bad build costs a controlled run instead of a shift. They are the same machine as Unit 7, down to the pickaxe.

The floor is down, the plinths are set, and the consoles are going in a double row the length of the room. The lounge end went in ahead of the working end, which is the opposite of how these usually go. Nothing is in service yet — that is October.

Lea, our Chief Operating Officer and Decorator Extraordinaire, spent the week on the half of the lab that is not consoles: sofas, a low table, and a reading chair under the glass. Her case for it is that anyone debugging at two in the morning should have somewhere to sit that is not a plinth.

Second shift at the main yard cuts the typical order-to-delivery window from four days to two across all standard blends.
The R&D lab takes shape under glass
The glass is on and the floor is down. The first plinths are already carrying hardware, though most of what will sit on them is still in crates and the far end is bare dirt. Lea is running the build.
